Xabi Alonso to Liverpool: ‘Huge’ update as special agreement revealed – sources
Xabi Alonso has a clause inserted in his Bayer Leverkusen contract that would allow him to leave and become Liverpool manager in the summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The 42-year-old has become a top candidate to take over at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp’s bombshell announcement that he’ll be leaving at the end of the 2023-24 season.
Alonso currently has a contract with Leverkusen that runs until 2026, but it is understood that he has a clause in his deal allowing him to leave for the teams he previously played for.
It is understood that Alonso will therefore be free to leave Leverkusen at the end of the season if one of Liverpool, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich offers him a deal.
That is seen as a huge boost to the Merseysiders’ hopes of luring their former star from Germany.
The Spaniard spent five years at Liverpool as a player, making 210 appearances for the Reds while winning the FA Cup and Champions League.
He only has two years of experience as a manager having taken the Leverkusen job in 2022, but already he is on the verge of title success in Germany.

Alonso’s Leverkusen side sit top of the Bundesliga table after 18 games played and are unbeaten with 15 wins and three draws.
When questioned on his links to the Liverpool job, Alonso said: “I am very happy at Leverkusen with my players at the moment. [It was a] big surprise of course – for what Jurgen did in Liverpool I have great respect and admiration.”
