Xavi has already hinted at Chelsea move amid Enzo Maresca sack bombshell

Xavi has been installed as the early favourite to replace Enzo Maresca after he was unceremoniously sacked by Chelsea on Thursday.

The Italian has struggled to address his team’s consistency issues in the early stages of the Premier League season, but it is matters away from the pitch that have ultimately cost him his job.

Maresca has shown his frustration at Chelsea with his comments in recent weeks, and a breakdown in the relationship between himself and Todd Boehly has resulted in the club deciding to part ways.

Attention at Stamford Bridge has already turned towards the potential candidates to replace Maresca, and Xavi’s name is already featuring highly on several lists of options.

Xavi’s previous comments suggest he’d take Chelsea job

Xavi is the favourite to take over at Chelsea, with bookmakers also backing the likes of Liam Rosenior and Fulham’s Marco Silva to be likely candidates for the role.

The Spaniard has been out of work since he departed Barcelona back in 2024, but that could be about to change if the Blues take steps towards potentially appointing him.

The former midfielder came up against the West London outfit on several occasions during his playing career, and he is completely aware of the magnitude of the club that he is being linked with.

Xavi’s previous comments have even suggested that he would be inclined to take the job if he were to be handed the opportunity.

He previously stated in 2023 that he thinks the Chelsea job is a “good project,” according to Ultimo Minuto, and added that he would love to work in the Premier League because he “adores the passion there.”

While he has never specifically suggested that he would take the job at Stamford Bridge, all the signs are there to suggest that he would be hugely grateful to accept the opportunity if an approach for him were made.

Todd Boehly to plan inevitable Xavi meeting

Xavi has also been linked with Manchester United of late, as pressure continues to build on Ruben Amorim after they were held by Wolves in midweek.

However, a meeting between Xavi and Boehly is surely inevitable after the previous events that occurred between the two parties.

The ex-Barcelona chief was viewed as a strong candidate before Maresca was given the job in the summer of 2024, and he even met with the Chelsea hierarchy to discuss the role, according to journalist Pedro Almeida via his X account.

As a result, it is surely inevitable that he will be called in for an interview once again on this occasion, given that he has clearly been admired at Stamford Bridge for a lengthy period of time.

There are plenty of other interesting candidates to take the reins, but after opting against Xavi last time, Boehly may not be inclined to miss the opportunity to appoint him this time around.
