Yan Diomande to Liverpool: Keith Wyness warns of Bundesliga adaptation issue

Yan Diomande may need time to settle into the Premier League if he decides to join Liverpool in the summer transfer window.

That is according to ex-Everton, Aston Villa, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes Diomande “could take time to adjust” to playing in the Premier League from the Bundesliga.

Multiple clubs are keeping tabs on Diomande as the 19-year-old has enjoyed a successful first season at RB Leipzig with 10 goals and five assists in 24 Bundesliga appearances.

With Mohamed Salah expected to leave Liverpool in the summer, a new winger is on their radar to replace the 33-year-old.

Yan Diomande faces ‘difficult’ Liverpool challenge

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – questions whether Diomande can make the step up to the Premier League.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states the likes of Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike both took time to hit form at Anfield following their moves from Germany.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s always difficult to, I think, in my view, is actually evaluating players in the Bundesliga and if they can really do it in the Premier League.

“And we’ve seen it’s taken a few, like they’ve had Florian Wirtz and Ekitike, it took a little while to settle in as well. And you wonder if Diomande could face the same sort of issue in terms of fitting in. It’s all right doing it in the Bundesliga, but can you really do it in the Premier League?

“And as we’ve seen, some of those players haven’t been able to fit in and hit the ground running. So just as I was just saying about Quansah, where I think he could because he understands what’s going on there, Diomande, while he’s a very talented player, could take some time to adjust to the speed and physicality of the Premier League compared to the Bundesliga.”

Liverpool in transfer race for Anthony Gordon

Wyness also told Football Insider that Liverpool could be the next club for Anthony Gordon amid his uncertain future at Newcastle.

Liverpool and Arsenal have both been linked with Gordon, who could seek a move away from St James’ Park in the summer.

The 25-year-old is another option to replace Salah, though the forward has only contributed four goals and two assists in the Premier League for Newcastle this season.
