‘You need to earn the right’ – Wayne Rooney rips into Ruben Amorim after ‘confusing’ Man United comments

Wayne Rooney has pulled no punches with his assessment of Ruben Amorim’s comments after Manchester United drew 1-1 at Leeds.

Matheus Cunha’s goal secured Manchester United a share of the points at Elland Road, but the Red Devils have now drawn consecutive games against teams in the bottom five of the table.

They travel to Burnley for their next assignment in midweek, as they are set for another opportunity to notch three points against a side who are struggling at the foot of the division.

Amorim has been under pressure at Old Trafford for months, and that is set to ramp up once again after what he said during his post-match press conference on Sunday afternoon.

Wayne Rooney points to lack of ‘authority’ for Ruben Amorim

Rooney has criticised Manchester United heavily in recent months, and he wasted no time in piling in on Amorim following the draw with Leeds.

The Portuguese stormed out of his post-match press conference at Elland Road after highlighting his unhappiness with the current situation at Old Trafford.

Amorim has 18 months left on his deal at Manchester United, and his latest reveal looks set to provide fresh scrutiny on his position, which has already been called into question on several occasions since his arrival.

Rooney has been quick to call out the 40-year-old after what he said, and he has made it clear that he feels he doesn’t have the credentials to be making bold comments regarding the club hierarchy.

“You need to earn the right to be able to dictate exactly what happens at a football club, especially one like Manchester United,” the United legend said on The Wayne Rooney Show.

“If (Pep) Guardiola comes into Manchester United, for instance, I don’t think anyone would question what players he wanted to bring in or the system he used.

“I feel for him a little bit, but he’s not Guardiola, he’s not Jurgen Klopp. He doesn’t have that history or that background, so I don’t think he should be speaking with that authority.

“The words that he used were very confusing to me.”

Who could replace Amorim at Man United?

Oliver Glasner is the early favourite to replace Amorim at Old Trafford, with the Crystal Palace chief’s current deal in South London due to expire at the end of the season.

The Austrian’s exit from Selhurst Park appears to be a formality amid their recent sticky patch, and United may be able to tempt him into making the switch if they were to remove Amorim.

Alongside Glasner, the likes of Michael Carrick and Gareth Southgate are also being linked with the position, although neither have recent experience of Premier League management.

Amorim’s situation is sure to be reviewed by the club hierarchy due to the nature of his comments, and when you throw in the inconsistency that his team have shown so far this term, all the ingredients could be there for him to lose his job.
