‘Yves Bissouma handed final lifeline to save Tottenham career’

Tottenham supporters have been incredibly underwhelmed by Yves Bissouma’s performances so far this season and he now faces what could be a make-or-break opportunity.

The 28-year-old has started just 13 of Spurs’ 28 Premier League matches to date, and while injuries are certainly part of the problem this season, he has found himself on the bench far too many times.

Ange Postecoglou seems to favour a partnership of Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr in the middle of the park, with Lucas Bergvall even growing into a far more key position in the Tottenham team.

The Lilywhites splashed £25million to sign Bissouma from Brighton in 2022 [BBC Sport], but he has not exactly lit up the Premier League since his move to North London.

Yves Bissouma facing fan fury as Tottenham exit mooted

While the Mali international’s current deal expires in the summer of 2026, Tottenham fans have called for Bissouma to “be sold this summer“, especially after the 1-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar on Thursday 6 March.

Bentancur was also caught up in the immediate aftermath but he has shown far more skill, creativity, heart and desire on the pitch than his midfield partner since moving from Juventus.

Postecoglou could be on the brink of his Tottenham exit right now, but with a second leg to overturn a one-goal deficit against AZ, Bissouma might have just been handed the perfect opportunity to redeem himself.

Rodrigo Bentancur unavailable for Europa League second leg v AZ Alkmaar

Bentancur’s yellow card in the first leg means the Uruguayian is suspended for the home clash on Thursday 13 March, providing Bissouma with the perfect opportunity to prove himself.

Spurs’ season is completely riding on the Europa League title, having been knocked out of the EFL Cup and FA Cup by Liverpool and Aston Villa, and the team sitting 13th in the Premier League table.

Rodrigo Bentancur is suspended for the AZ Alkmaar return leg.

Last season, Bissouma proved himself to be the midfielder who could lead the Lilywhites forward over the coming campaigns but that has not come to fruition this term.

If the former Brighton man is not to be moved on this summer, he needs to remind Postecoglou of the player he can be when he’s at his best, not when he’s at his worst.
