Aston Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Reading on Tuesday night in the Championship and the club’s fans expressed their disappointment on social media with many criticising Glenn Whelan for his display.
The 33-year-old played the full 90 minutes at the Madejski Stadium but it was his own goal just after the half-time interval which opened the scoring for the hosts.
Modou Barrow scored a second for Reading just minutes later and although Conor Hourihane fired in a stunning strike in the latter stages, Villa were unable to get the equalising goal and left empty-handed.
The visitors were completely overrun in the midfield throughout the match and summer signing Whelan struggled to exhort his authority on the pitch.
The Villa supporters took to social media to deliver their verdict on the midfielder’s performance on the night.
Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:
Ive had time to digest the #Avfc game, and all i can say is, Whelan has the manoeuvrability of a futon cushion

I know it's early days but does anyone else think that Glenn Whelan looks like an absolutely shocking signing? #avfc

I thought Whelan was a gritty defensive mid ready to stick a boot in anywhere. Didn't see ANY of that tonight. #avfc

Bruce aside who should resign tonight, Think Whelan & especially Terry have been atrocious and haven't brought anything to the team #avfc

My grandad could move quicker than Whelan! And he's got no legs! #avfc

If Whelan wasn't a new signing we would be slating him after these 3 performances, absolutely terrible #avfc

The Republic of Ireland international moved to Villa Park this summer from Premier League side Stoke City for a reported fee of £1million.
The midfielder has started in every Championship match so far but it has been a nightmare beginning with Villa failing to secure a single victory, conceding six goals in the process.
