It is vital that Leeds United add “two or three” more signings if they are to have any hope of staying up, according to Kevin Phillips.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Premier League golden boot winner delivered his verdict as Leeds stepped up their pursuit of Rodrigo De Paul.

This site revealed that the Whites are in constant contact with De Paul as they continue to negotiate with Udinese who have placed a £37million price tag on the attacking midfielder.

The club are also confident of signing 18-year-old central defender Josko Gvardiol from Dinamo Zargreb.

Leeds have already added Spanish striker Rodrigo from Valencia and German defender Robin Koch from Freiburg this window.

However, Phillips still believes they need more additions if they are to stay up, pointing to the example of Aston Villa from last season.

He told Football Insider: “I’m not saying get as many players in as you can but you’ve only got to look at Villa last year.

“I know they did it a bit late on but they had a fairly decent squad and their squad helped them over the season when they had injuries, the likes of John McGinn were out for a good while. Of course, the break obviously helped for him to come back.

“I think you need a decent squad in the Premier League just to give you that chance of survival.

“So I think another two or three signings through the door for Leeds will definitely help them moving forward.”
