Arsenal 23-year-old makes startling admission after win v Middlesbrough, fans will not be happy

By Matt Bullin

Arsenal and England ace Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has claimed that it did not matter how his side won, as they beat Middlesbrough 2-1 on Monday night.

It’s a startling admission from a side that prides itself on playing football and winning with style, and shows how far they’ve fallen in recent weeks – especially as their opponents are facing relegation from the Premier League.

The victory at the Riverside came courtesy of goals from Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.

The win came on the back of an embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace.

It means Arsenal have now taken seven points from a possible 18 – and the Gunners will hope the result can kick-start their top four challenge.

Wenger changed his tactics for the match at the Riverside as he employed a 3-4-3, with Rob Holding, Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel operating as a back three.

Nacho Monreal and Oxlade-Chamberlain played in the unfamiliar wing-back roles.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror after the match, the 25-time England international said that the side had to go back to basics in search of a win.

He said: “What we have done over the last few games has not been good enough, we needed to take responsibility for that and I think we have done that this week between ourselves.

“We knew it didn’t matter how we won, we had to go out there and get back to basics and that is about making sure our commitment levels are right to play for this football club.”

The 23-year-old has been a feature in Arsenal’s side this campaign due to his versatility and has made 40 appearances in all competitions playing on the wings, in central midfield and now as a wing-back.

Arsenal leapfrogged Everton with the win and now sit sixth – seven points behind Man City in fourth, although they do have a game in hand.
