Aston Villa 24-year-old makes bold claim about remainder of season, fans will love this

By Danny Wright

Sam Johnstone still believes that Aston Villa have a chance of reaching the play-off places this season.

Villa have won five of their last six matches with the 24-year-old goalkeeper keeping clean sheets in all of the victories.

Steve Bruce’s side are currently 12th in the Championship standings and are 11 points shy of Sheffield Wednesday who occupy the lowest play-off spot.

The Birmingham-based club were threatened with back-to-back relegations not too long ago after a rotten spell of form saw them just a few points clear of the bottom three.

However thanks to their recent resurgence Johnstone is setting his sights on a more ambitious goal.

The shot-stopper moved to Villa Park in January on a loan deal from Manchester United.

The Telegraph have recently reported that he has been in talks with making his move to the West Midlands a permanent one to the tune of £3million.

“The club is massive. It is a Premier League club. They need to be back up there and, hopefully, I can help them do that,” said Johnstone to United’s official website.

“It would take some doing but you never know in this league. Anyone can beat anyone. In January, we were on top for most of the games but just couldn’t get the results.

“Things are swinging our way now and we’re getting the results as well as the performances. Hopefully, we can carry it on in the last eight games and keep pushing to maybe just sneak into the play-offs at the last minute and take it from there.”

Villa still have a number of tough fixtures to play before the end of the season with clashes against Norwich, Reading, Fulham and Brighton still on the calendar.

Talking to Aston Villa’s official website this week, manager Steve Bruce has said his side needs to win seven of their remaining eight games, and draw the other, to have any chance of the play-offs.

Johnstone has made 14 appearances for Villa since arriving as a part of a huge January transfer window for the club.

He came in for a lot of criticism from fans after failing to perform in his opening few games with the club but his newly found lease of life appears to have convinced the Villa Park faithful that he could become a long-term No. 1 at the club.
