26-year-old miles better than Reds ace: Three things we learned about Man United from draw against Liverpool

By Amir Mir

Football Insider analyses the three talking points after Manchester United draw 1-1 with Liverpool at Old Trafford.

David de Gea miles better than Simon Mignolet

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet produced a solid display at Old Trafford, in particular, during the first half. However, his 26-year-old counterpart, David de Gea is miles better than the Reds ace. De Gea’s composure on the ball when bringing the ball out from the back is a high-quality skill to have. But his biggest strength is the calmness the Spaniard brings to the United defensive backline. There are many great keepers in the Premier League, from Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris to Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois. But it is fair to say, de Gea can call himself the best keeper in the league and perhaps Europe.

Paul Pogba needs to find consistency

It was a daft decision from the world’s most expensive player to handle the ball inside his own penalty area. That mistake saw the midfielders head drop and as a result his performance sink during the game. After a slow start to the campaign, he began to find his mojo during the past few months, in particular during United’s last nine fixtures. However, he failed to have an impact on this game and if he wants to live up to his bill, Pogba must step up. Consistency is one thing the youngster needs to find if he is to be part of a successful United team.

Jose Mourinho needs to invest in a new left-back

Jose Mourinho needs to invest in a new left-back and simply cannot reply upon Matteo Darmian as a back-up. First choice full-back Luke Shaw has been plagued by injuries in recent seasons and Mourinho needs a well-working operator on that left-hand side if he wants to build a title winning team. Reports in the media suggested that the Manchester club is targeting Tottenham duo, Danny Rose and Kyle Walker. One thing is for sure they must try and bring Rose to Old Trafford if they are to find consistency and that winning formula in the coming seasons.
