28-year-old has gone cold: Three things we learned from Chelsea in win v Man City
COMMENT By Matt Bullin
Football Insider analyses the talking points from Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
Zouma was not ready for return
It was always going to be a tough ask for the 22-year-old making his first Premier League start in 14 months against the likes of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane and David Silva. And it proved to be too much for young Zouma as he was substituted at half time. The defender lost Aguero allowing him to score following Thibaut Courtois’ poor ball and looked nervous throughout the opening 45 minutes, however there were small glimpses of quality in his performance.
Diego Costa has gone cold
Costa has 17 Premier League goals this season – he is a goalscorer. But the Spaniard has not netted in three games for Chelsea now and to be honest it is hard to see why. Costa’s work rate, tenacity and movement are all still there just not the goals. He was not able to create any chances for himself against City and he was not able to link up with any of his team mates to make any either. Luckily for him and Chelsea, Eden Hazard was on form to be the difference against Pep Guardiola’s side.

Conte’s men march on
This was not the most fluent Chelsea performance by any stretch of the imagination – but they got the job done and bounced back well from a disappointing result over the weekend. Hazard stepped up to be the difference and Gary Cahill and David Luiz were superb in defence. Their lead at the top of the table is still seven points after Tottenham’s late heroics at Swansea, but this win is a huge step towards the title for Antonio Conte’s side.
