32-year-old deserves deal: Three things we learned about Aston Villa after loss to Tottenham
COMMENT By Will Butcher
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Aston Villa’s 2-0 loss to Tottenham in the third round of the FA Cup at White Hart Lane.
Defender deserves deal
Alan Hutton should be offered a new contract with the Midlands giants, after producing a solid display on the right of Villa’s defence. Facing his old side, the Scotland international made a number of tackles on the likes of Vincent Janssen, Heung Min-Son and Ben Davies as he continues to remain Steve Bruce’s first-choice right-back. With less than six months remaining on his current Villa Park contract, a new deal should be handed to the 32-year-old after a number of consistent displays for Villa.
Striker is desperately needed
Gabby Agbonlahor failed to catch the eye on Sunday as Tottenham’s three-man defence of Cameron Carter-Vickers, Toby Alderweireld and Kevin Wimmer shut the door with ease. With a number of Premier League forwards on Bruce’s radar, the 30-year-old must be replaced this month with Jonathan Kodjia and Jordan Ayew currently in Gabon at the African Cup of Nations. With a more prolific striker leading the line for Villa, Bruce could see his side close in on the Championship play-offs.

Sam Johnstone is a top signing
The former Manchester United goalkeeper’s debut was an impressive one, as he marshalled his penalty area with a number of important catches and punches. A flying one-handed save from Johnstone in the second half from South Korea international Heung-Min Son was the highlight of his performance, but he could do nothing about Ben Davies and Son’s goals. With Johnstone now looking to have cemented himself as Villa’s number one, Pierluigi Gollini’s future is now in doubt.
