Pundit can't believe Chelsea transfer latest amid behind-the-scenes Cristiano Ronaldo news

Noel Whelan has insisted the signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang suits Chelsea much more than a scrapped move for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested that tensions between sacked boss Thomas Tuchel and owner Todd Boehly may have arisen as a result of the aborted transfer.

Chelsea were extensively linked with wantaway Man United star Ronaldo, 37, during the summer window, but eventually elected to sign Aubameyang on transfer deadline day (1 September).

According to The Athletic (8 September), relations at Stamford Bridge were “strained” when Tuchel made his opposition to signing Ronaldo known to Boehly on “no uncertain terms”.

The report claims the American businessman privately described Tuchel as a “nightmare” to deal with in the transfer market.

Chelsea completed the signings of Aubameyang, Wesley Fofana, Denis Zakaria, Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemenka, and Gabriel Slonina during the summer.

Whelan insisted Boehly was right to respect his manager’s wishes by abandoning a potential move for Ronaldo.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Ronaldo wanted a move and Chelsea could have done with him.

“But no matter how much the board may not want a player – if the manager isn’t accepting of it, then they’re not accepting of it.

“They went out and got Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang instead – and he suits them a lot more as a centre-forward player still in his prime years.

“It’s clear that there was a bit of tension between manager and owner because of this, and that’s never a good sign.

“There needs to be that harmony between every senior member of staff.”
