Everton will hire Marcel Brands as their new director of football in the coming weeks, according to a reliable journalist.

Sky Sports reporter Alan Myers claimed on his personal Twitter account on Wednesday that just the finishing touches are left to be added to the deal that will bring the 56-year-old Dutchman to Goodison Park.

The Liverpool Echo reported last month that Everton were in contact with PSV sporting director Brands with current director of football Steve Walsh facing the axe.

Football Insider verdict

Everton are not messing around this summer and are keen to get rid of everyone who saw the club go backwards this season. Walsh’s signings from last summer led to a shocking loss of form in the Premier League that at one stage saw them looking like relegation contenders. Ronald Koeman’s was ultimately sacked for his part in wasting all that cash while results on the pitch failed to improve. Sam Allardyce, who has now been sacked, steadied the ship and managed to salvage an eight-place finish, but the Toffees board still seem unhappy with how things are being run and want big changes. Brand is likely to adopt a different way of thinking at Goodison Park. He has never had a lot of money to play around with in his career but has overseen a PSV side that is happy to develop youngsters. Everton may be looking to the future by appointing Brands, which is probably a good idea considering the number of high-quality players in the academy.
