‘A little bit strange’ – Former Rangers star makes big Gerrard claim
Former Rangers captain Lee McCulloch thinks Steven Gerrard will find the transition from player to manager “really natural” after spending so many years leading players as captain for Liverpool and England.
Gerrard takes the reins of his first managerial role on Friday and McCulloch insists that he has no worries over Gerrard coping with the change.
The former Gers skipper also claimed that Gerrard’s past as a player will see him command immediate respect in the dressing room.
“Steven was the main man at Liverpool for so many years, even though he wasn’t the manager. So I think this will be a really natural transition for him,” McCulloch said, as quoted by the Evening Times.
“Yes, he is now the boss. But he is still leading a dressing room and in that regard it is the same as he did for years and years at Anfield.
“That, for me, is one of his key attributes. As soon as he talks, the players will listen and he will have that respect.
“It might be a little bit strange for him at the start, but I don’t have any worries about how he will cope when he officially starts at Rangers.”
Football Insider verdict:
Gerrard’s background at the top of the game as a player should make the changeover much easier but that is no guarantee of success for the Liverpool icon. The 37-year-old brings a wealth of experience from his playing career in addition to Gary McAllister’s history as both a player and manager so the Light Blues should be in a good place with the appointment of the management duo. There won’t be many scenarios that crop up that Gerrard and McAllister will have never experienced at some point in their long careers and that should serve the Light Blues well next season as they look to snatch the Scottish title back from bitter rivals Celtic for the first time since 2011. Neither will suffer fools gladly either so the Gers players could be in for a bit of a shock if they think they can float along like they have recently.
