Aaron Ramsdale: Newcastle prioritise new goalkeeper deal as Southampton return looms
Aaron Ramsdale’s future at Newcastle United remains unclear as the club lines up a new goalkeeper signing this summer.
Ramsdale has forced his way into the Newcastle starting eleven over the last month while on loan from Championship side Southampton.
He has replaced Nick Pope between the sticks under Eddie Howe, with starts in each of the Magpies’ last six games in all competitions.
Despite finding his way into the side, Howe is still undecided over whether to sign Ramsdale permanently, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast.
Newcastle’s transfer plans are set to centre around signing a new keeper aside from the England man, but it remains to be seen who out of him and Pope stays on Tyneside this summer.

Newcastle have been linked to several goalkeeper targets ahead of the summer window, such as James Trafford, Robin Risser and Bart Verbruggen.
Ramsdale’s own future will be dictated by what happens at his parent club, Southampton, as they are gunning for a playoff place and may want him back as their first-choice keeper if they are promoted this season.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “It does look like Newcastle will be prioritising a new goalkeeper, with Nick Pope losing his number one spot to Aaron Ramsdale recently.
“Ramsdale is only on loan from Southampton, and we’re not sure if that deal will be made permanent.”
Newcastle battling Tottenham for Risser deal
RC Lens stopper Risser has emerged as a standout in Ligue 1 this season, with 24 goals conceded and 10 clean sheets in 27 league matches so far.
His great form has placed him on the radar of numerous top clubs, with sources telling Football Insider that Newcastle lead Spurs in the race for Risser due to the latter’s relegation fears.
He could end up being the new keeper that the Magpies sign this summer, but it remains to be seen if he replaces Ramsdale or Pope.
