Abdukodir Khusanov to Newcastle? Pundit drops signing verdict

Newcastle United have been backed to complete the signing of Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov in the January transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson, who remains well-connected within the game, explained that Newcastle are interested in the defender to add pace to their back line.

However, he went on to question whether the signing of such an inexperienced player would be a smart move for Eddie Howe’s side in their current situation.

Khusanov, 20, has made just 62 senior appearances in his career and 37 of those came in the Belorussian second tier. He has also picked up 16 caps for Uzbekistan.

Since moving to Lens in 2023, the defender has established himself as a hot prospect in Ligue 1, but his lack of experience still remains an issue.

While the deal would be one with his exciting potential in mind, the Magpies’ ambitions are to qualify for European football, and to do so would require more experienced heads.

Newcastle tipped to make Abdukodir Khusanov signing

Newcastle have been aiming to improve their defence since the summer transfer window after injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles left them short of options.

Khusanov is the latest name to have been linked with a move to St James’ Park, but Robinson is not convinced he is what they need, despite the interest.

It’s a difficult one,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s a Uzbekistan international with 16 caps and he’s a good player.

“At 20 years old, you’re buying potential at centre-back.

“But when you look at the experience he’s got, he’s only played a handful of games.

“One thing that’s worrying about the Newcastle back line is the lack of pace at centre-back.

“So yes, Khusanov is an option for them, and they’d be buying potential.

“But there’s the risk of buying a very young player who hasn’t established himself at the top level, and asking him to go straight into playing Premier League football.

“He’s certainly one to watch for the future, but if you’re looking for a quick fix, I’m not convinced I’d hang my hat on somebody with such inexperience.

“He’s a quality player and a lot of clubs are looking at him, but not to put him straight into the XI.”
