'Absolute diamond' - Hutton Exclusive: Rangers may have just sealed Celtic-type deal

Alan Hutton has claimed Rangers may just have sealed a Celtic-type deal by landing Calvin Bassey from Leicester City.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Gers defender claimed he could do the same job for Steven Gerrard as their rivals’ “absolute diamond” Jeremie Frimpong.

As revealed by Football Insider, Rangers believe they have got their hands on a player worth £3million for a tenth of the price after snapping Bassey up on a pre-contract deal on Saturday.

It is understood that Premier League sides, including West Ham, were keen on signing Bassey but the youngster wanted to develop himself by playing regular first-team football at Ibrox.

Having seen 19-year-old Frimpong make waves at Celtic after joining as a relatively unknown youngster, Hutton is hoping that Bassey can follow in his fellow full-back’s footsteps.

Hutton told Football Insider: “I think we’re seeing it more often now, the young boys taking their step out their comfort zone to get first-team football. I’m pretty sure that’s what he’s looking for and he’ll be giving his all for that.

“Frimpong is a great example, one who came up, we didn’t really think he was going to be in the first-team this season but pushed on, kicked on and deserved his place. He’s an absolute diamond of a player so I’m hoping Rangers have got something similar.

“I think one of the main things for him is the better chance of playing first-team football, even though he’s arguably got one of Rangers’ best players playing in front of him. I think there’s other positions he can play, he looks like can do all those sort of positions.

“He looks versatile and at 20-years-old he’s going to learn all these different positions which is only going to be good.”

Frimpong, who did not play for Manchester City’s first team before joining Celtic, has gone on to play 19 times for the Bhoys, with two goals and three assists under his belt.

Bassey will leave Leicester without making a senior appearance for the Foxes, although he was a near-ever-present for the under-23s.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED the Gers have set their sights on another youngster under Brendan Rodgers’ nose.
