Noel Whelan has ripped into the “incompetence” of some referees and officials after they appeared to miss a Tottenham handball against West Ham on Tuesday.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Premier League striker insists it is “absolutely criminal” how some “blatant” decisions have been missed by the likes of VAR.

Moyes was left raging with the officials in the Irons’ defeat to Spurs, telling Sky Sports he couldn’t believe first goal had been allowed after the ball hit Davinson Sanchez’s arm.

A failure in goalline technology at Aston Villa saw Sheffield United miss out on a goal, with officials choosing not to use the VAR system despite the ball clearly crossing the line.

Whelan admits he is fuming with what he saw at Villa Park and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, highlighting how small decisions could have a huge impact in the relegation fight.

Whelan told Football Insider: “They’ve got a few things wrong already from this restart, starting with the Sheffield United goal against Villa, to now the handball – it’s pretty blatant.

“I’ve seen it over and over again, I really don’t understand how you can miss that when you’ve got everything there right in front of you. We’re watching the TV screen, they can actually zoom in, see it over and over again.

“It just goes to show the incompetence of some referees and some people sitting in the VAR studio if they can’t even get that decision right. I mean come on, it’s absolutely blatant, it’s criminal.

“West Ham are struggling down there, they need this to go right and these people are getting to paid to do the best job – it wasn’t done.”

Speaking to Sky Sports after Tuesday’s clash, Moyes said: “I can’t believe they’ve ruled that as a goal. The rules are that any handball that leads to a goal is disallowed? We had a great goal ruled out against Sheffield United for something – and they’ve not ruled that one out?”

The Irons currently sit 17th in the Premier League table, outside the relegation zone on goal difference alone.
