The ageing Argentinian defender, now 33, is coming to the end of his playing days, and despite being one of the Hammers most consistent performers in a difficult season, he can’t be expected to keep meeting such high standards.
All of this means that top of the Hammers list of priorities for the summer transfer window ought to be someone that can fill the former Manchester City defender’s boots.
And Pereira, who has a £36m release clause, can be that man.
The 24-year-old is being closely monitored by the Foxes and is highly-regarded in the Primeira Liga where he has starred for the Portuguese division’s second-placed side.
In fact, the full-back has been part of a Porto defence which has conceded just 16 goals all season – the best in the entire league.
The right-sided flyer has a contract with the Portuguese outfit until next summer which means with no deal yet signed as an extension, should reasonable offers arrive for the player, the club will be tempted to sell.
With the West Ham owners in need of making a number of marquee signings this summer in order to appease the disenchanted Hammers crowd, Pereira should be one of those.
