Agbonlahor: Aston Villa defender Mings has 'shut everyone up'

Gabby Agbonlahor has heaped praise on Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings for silencing his critics with an “outstanding” display for England.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed there will be no debate over his position when England face Scotland on Friday night.

Mings made his tournament debut alongside John Stones as Harry Maguire was ruled out with injury.

The 28-year-old had an impressive season with Villa where he helped Dean Smith’s side match a club record of 15 Premier League clean sheets.

However, there were still doubts over his position in the England starting XI with many calling for the inclusion of Ben White.

But Agbonlahor has insisted those doubts have now evaporated.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I had this argument about people saying White should start ahead of Tyrone Mings, I said on the radio that was ridiculous.

“He’s been outstanding for Aston Villa this season. Villa kept 15 clean sheets this season.

“He’s been outstanding playing for England for a while now. He’s got a lot of caps.

“He proved why Southgate chose him. He’s got the pace to help Stones at the back, he was strong, he was aggressive, he won every header.

“For me, everyone will now shut up about Tyrone Mings starting.

“He’s England’s first-choice centre-half when Maguire’s injured.”

Mings ended the game at Wembley with a pass accuracy of 90 per cent, according to sofascore.

He looks set to retain his place alongside Stones as Scotland visit London on Friday night.

In other news, Aston Villa have been told to sign a Champions League winner who reportedly wants a move.
