Agbonlahor: Aston Villa tipped to gazump Rangers to transfer targets after source's Gerrard reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has suggested Aston Villa could sign the Rangers transfer targets Steven Gerrard could not afford when he was at Ibrox.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer insisted Gerrard will want to improve on the squad he has inherited from Dean Smith.

A Villa source told Football Insider (November 12) the club will provide their new manager with “huge” funds in the January transfer window and next summer.

This site revealed today (November 17) the current squad are “genuinely excited” to be working under the England and Liverpool legend.

Asked whether he expects Villa to have a busy January window, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I do.

“The difference for Steven Gerrard now is he can afford a different type of player than the ones he could at Rangers. There are more finances.

“He knows he’s going to get judged on where he finishes this season and where he finishes next season.

“He’s not going to just settle for a squad of players that are there at the moment. He’s going to want to improve and bring in his own players.

“He may have had his eye on players at Rangers that he couldn’t afford.

“Now, if he’s given the right money in January, he may look at it and think ‘I could do with another centre-midfielder, a left-winger, a defensive midfielder’.”

Aston Villa spent almost £100million in the summer transfer window with the signings of Leon Bailey, Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia.

In contrast, Rangers signed John Lundstram and Fashion Sakala on free transfers while Juninho Bacuna arrived without the club paying a fee upfront.
