Gabby Agbonlahor has encouraged Celtic to make a move for exit-bound Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa captain insisted the Hoops need to sign a “reliable” stopper like Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor and Heaton “100 per cent” fits the bill.
Heaton looks set to leave Villa Park at the end of the season when his contract expires.
He moved to the club in the summer of 2019 but suffered a serious knee injury the following January and has not featured since.
Manager Dean Smith revealed earlier this month Heaton, along with Ahmed Elmohamady and Neil Taylor, is set to sit down with sporting director Johan Lange over the coming weeks to discuss their future.
Celtic are in desperate need of a goalkeeper after using three stoppers this term.
The Scottish Sun report the Hoops will offload Vasilis Barkas after his disastrous campaign in Glasgow.
Asked whether Heaton would be a good option for the Bhoys, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.
“He’s a great goalkeeper.
“You could get him on a two-year deal or something and you know he’s not going to let you down.
“Maybe that’s something both player and club will look at.
“They definitely need to get somebody in who’s reliable because McGregor at Rangers is very reliable.
“Your keepers can you win leagues.”
Scott Bain has started every game under interim manager John Kennedy between the sticks after beginning the campaign as second-choice.
The 29-year-old has kept eight clean sheets in 25 games across all competitions this season for the Hoops.
