Agbonlahor cites Ings as he tips Newcastle to sign striker after latest news
Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Newcastle United to sign a new striker as Callum Wilson is too injury prone.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa captain cited Southampton striker Danny Ings as he explained Newcastle are a different side without Wilson.
The 29-year-old has scored 12 goals and provided five assists in 26 Premier League games this season and was recently named as the club’s Player of the Season.
The Magpie’s side have won just once in his absence – their recent 1-0 victory over relegated Sheffield United.
Steve Bruce told talkSPORT earlier this month missing Wilson and winger Allan Saint-Maximin was the reason for their poor form in the middle of the season.
Asked whether he needs to sign another striker, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think they do.
“Steve Bruce will be thinking about this because they’ve struggled without him this season.
“When a striker is injury prone like him, Steve Bruce will be thinking of next season ‘Can we be stuck with just Gayle and Joelinton? We might have the same struggles.’
“Newcastle have to have their best players out there to get results. When you’ve got someone injury prone like Wilson…
“Danny Ings is the same. He’s cost Southampton because he’s missed a lot of football.
“You’ve definitely got to look at another striker for sure because it looks like Wilson will keep picking up these injuries.”
If Newcastle win on Sunday against already relegated Fulham they will surpass last season’s points tally.
It will also equal the points tally in Rafa Benitez’s final season in charge.
In other news, Newcastle United have set their sights on signing a 31 goal and assist English centre-forward.
