Aston Villa manager Dean Smith

Gabriel Agbonlahor would love Aston Villa to sign Bournemouth striker Joshua King in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer suggested the club could sign the 28-year-old “on the cheap” next month because of his contract situation.

The Athletic report Villa are eyeing up a move for King after being priced out of a deal for Celtic striker Odsonne Eduoard.

King’s Bournemouth contract expires at the end of the season meaning the upcoming window is the last opportunity the Championship side have to demand a fee for the striker.

The 51-times Norway international is a proven Premier League goalscorer with 48 goals in 161 top-flight appearances and is able to play out wide and in a central role.

Agbonlahor has claimed his playing style and versatility means he would be a perfect signing for Dean Smith.

“I would 100 per cent get him,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider.

“You can’t have too many options. If Watkins got injured, he’d be the perfect replacement, King.

“I think he’s perfectly suited to the way Villa play – I can just picture him making runs in behind when Grealish is driving with the ball.

“It’s definitely something I would do.

“It’s a deal you can get on the cheap because he’s out of contract so they’ll sell him for cheap.”

King has played six times for the Cherries in the second-tier this season but is yet to register a goal or an assist.

The former Manchester United trainee has struggled with a thigh injury this term and has played just nine minutes of Championship football in the last since November 3.
