Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Rangers to offer Jermain Defoe a contract extension.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England and Aston Villa star insisted Defoe’s goalscoring display at the weekend showed he still has a lot to offer the Ibrox giants.
The 38-year-old was handed his first start since December as the Gers ran out 4-0 winners over Cover Rangers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.
Defoe, whose deal expires at the end of the season, revealed to Premier Sports he was desperate to play in front of the fans once again at Ibrox.
Steven Gerrard was more tight-lipped over his striker’s future, telling him to focus on their next game against Hibs rather than next season.
And Agbonlahor has claimed Steven Gerrard should do everything he can to retain Defoe.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I’d keep him, 100 per cent.
“He’s that player who’s not going to moan about not starting and can come on and make an impact.
“He showed from the weekend that he can still score goals.
“He’s definitely a player I’d keep.
“I’m sure Steven Gerrard might, at the end of the season, take up another year on him and keep him around.
“You need those squad players that aren’t going to moan about not playing.”
Defoe has been limited to just 574 minutes of football this season but has still managed to score five goals across all competitions.
Since arriving from Bournemouth, initially on loan, in 2019, the London-born ace has scored 30 times in 63 games for the Light Blues.
