Agbonlahor: Smith tipped to U-turn on Guilbert transfer from Aston Villa
Gabriel Agbonlahor has tipped Aston Villa to offer Ahmed Elmohamady a new contract and let Frederic Guilbert go for good.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Villa captained hailed Elmohamady, 33, as “Mr Reliable” and suggested he will be offered a new contract to replace his deal expiring in the summer.
Guilbert moved back to his native France in January by joining Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on loan until the end of the season.
This site revealed ahead of the January transfer window that Smith wanted Guilbert, 26, to play regular football in the second half of the season and come back to Villa Park ready to challenge first choice Matty Cash.
Cash then suffered an injury last month meaning Elmohamady has started Villa’s last two games at right-back.
The Egypt international has come up against two of the Premier League’s in-form wingers in the shape of Leicester City’s Harvey Barnes and Leeds United’s Raphinha.

And Agbonlahor has been left very impressed with how he has performed.
He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It shows why Villa let Guilbert go.
“They let him go because they’ve got such a good replacement in Elmohamady.
“I think they’ll give him another deal, Elmohamady. He’s Mr Reliable.
“He’s somebody you need in your squad, he’s a great squad player. When he comes in, he never lets you down and that could mean a change of heart and Guilbert going.”
Elmohamady has played 123 games across all competitions for Villa since his move from Hull City in the summer of 2017.
He has played 11 games this season including two games at centre-back in the Carabao Cup.
