Agbonlahor tips Defoe to take 'wage cut' to stay at Rangers after reveal via Sky

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Jermain Defoe to take a big wage cut and stay at Rangers next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-England forward insisted Steven Gerrard will be desperate to keep the 38-year-old at Ibrox for his impact in the dressing room.

Defoe scored his seventh goal of the season in their 4-0 win over Aberdeen at the weekend as Rangers lifted the Scottish Premiership title.

Speaking after the game, he told Sky Sports: “I want to stay here forever, I love it here, it is special.”

The Englishman’s contract is up at the end of the month.

Football Insider revealed earlier this year he would have to take a big cut on his £30,000-a-week wage to stay at Ibrox.

“He probably will take a wage cut,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“If you look at the money he’s earning with the game time he got this season compared to other players then he’d have to cut it down.

“But he’s a player I’d keep around for his experience and when he gets on the field he’s a threat. He scored a good amount of goals this season.

“It’s someone Steven Gerrard will appreciate from playing with him at England and knowing him.

“You need those older pros around there to help and fill in where need.

“To me, it makes sense and I’m sure he would take a wage cut to continue there because they’re building big things there with Champions League football, if they qualify.

“You can tell his character, I’ve been in England squads with him and he’s a top lad as well.”

In other news, Rangers are laying the groundwork for signing the “next Sadio Mane” as a £6million-valued ace may quit Ibrox.
