Agbonlahor tips Rangers to secure last-minute Defoe deal after Sky reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Jermain Defoe to sign a last-minute one-year extension to his Rangers contract.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Steven Gerrard would “love” to have the 38-year-old at Ibrox for another season.

Defoe proved his worth to his manager on Sunday when he wrapped up Rangers’ 4-1 win over Celtic with a late goal after being introduced from the substitutes bench.

Gerrard told Sky Sports the club are “in talks” with the ex-England international but insisted they will give him time to make up his mind.

Football Insider revealed earlier this year Defoe will have to accept a major pay cut on his £30,000-a-week wages to stay at the Ibrox outfit.

After his goal on Sunday, the striker cut a relieved figure and he told the Daily Record afterwards the fact he had not scored a goal against Celtic was “eating him up”.

Asked whether that was a clue he knew he may not get another opportunity to score against the Hoops, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It could be.

“But to come on and score like he did, I’m sure if Steven Gerrard had a little bit of money spare he’d love to have him for another year.

“He’s showed he can come on and score goals at that level.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if it’s a late negotiation and he stays one more year.”

Defoe now has six goals and two assists to his name this season despite being limited to 18 games, including 13 appearances from the bench.

He has found the net 31 times and contributed 10 assists in 70 games across all competitions for the Light Blues.

In other news, a Premier League giant has made a move to re-sign a Rangers 25-year-old with a five-year deal being offered.
