Agbonlahor: Two Aston Villa U23s tipped for first-XI promotion after big development

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Louie Barry or Aaron Ramsey to be promoted to the Aston Villa first team.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer delivered his verdict after Trezeguet suffered a season-ending injury in their 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at the weekend.

Villa confirmed on Monday the winger will undergo knee surgery and will not feature again in this campaign.

Speaking after the game Dean Smith told Sky Sports: “He tried to carry on but, unfortunately, didn’t feel great so had to come off and was naturally upset and worried at what extent the injury is but only time will tell us.”

Trezeguet has featured in 23 matchday squads this season and his injury will free up a place on the bench.

“This gives Dean Smith a big change to bring in a Louie Barry or an Aaron Ramsey to give them six, seven games to be involved in the first team,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Even if they don’t get on, just being in the matchday squad and being around the first team and seeing what it’s all about will be a great experience for them.

“Knowing Dean Smith and John Terry that’s something they’ll definitely be doing.

“It will be an exciting time for some of the younger players.”

Barry is well known to Villa fans after he starred when a team made up of Under-18s and Under-23s were forced to play in the club’s FA Cup tie with Liverpool earlier this season.

Ramsey is the younger brother of first-team midfielder Jacob and won the Premier League 2 Player of the Month award for March.
