Foolish admission about Rangers star man plays into Celtic hands
COMMENT By Editor Wayne Veysey
What was Jonne Lindblom thinking?
Given the platform by a Scottish newspaper to wax lyrical about Rangers man-of-the-moment Alfredo Morelos ahead of the first Old Firm showdown of the season, the Finland-based agent shared a few tasty nuggets.
The Twitter abuse he received from Rangers fans after Morelos’ catastrophic unveiling in that Europa League nightmare against Progres Niederkorn, how his client’s brilliant form did not surprise him and his continual nudges about the need to learn English.
Nothing too untoward there.
But Lindblom then threw in a grenade that will have invited smirks and knowing winks from the Celtic management and players, and left Pedro Caixinha tearing his hair out.
“He is the kind of player who thrives on the big games,” Lindblom told the Daily Record. “The only worry is you can see that he can get overly excited at times.
“Hopefully the Celtic players won’t target him that much because he can lose his head sometimes. That’s one aspect in his game that he needs to learn but he is still a young guy.”
Hopefully the Celtic players won’t target him a hair-trigger temper?
Talk about naive. The revelation that this fixture might act like a red rag to ‘El Buffalo’, as Morelos is known, is all the insight that Celtic need to wind him up good and proper for every minute of one of Europe’s most tempestuous derbies.
It doesn’t require the combined detective nous of Poirot and Colombo to deduce that the Colombian striker is Rangers’ dangerman.
With eight goals in 10 games for his new club, six of which have come in six league matches, Morelos is proving to be a masterstroke of a signing.
Caixinha has recruited a few gems, most notably Bruno Alves and Graham Dorrans, but the bloke who puts the ball in the back of the net is always the most valuable.
Whichever defensive combination Brendan Rodgers puts out will now be armed with strict instructions to guard the Ibrox spearhead and, for good measure, rattle his cage.
Thanks to Lindblom and his big mouth, the whispers about Morelos’ suspect temperament have now become deafening.
It has played into Celtic hands perfectly.
In other Rangers news, a 26-year-old in the form of his life has revealed he was offered a number of deals to quit Ibrox this summer.
