Alan Myers issues Everton transfer update in response to Ross Barkley rumour

Ross Barkley’s rumoured emotional return to Everton this summer has drawn a transfer update from Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers.

The 31-year-old left Goodison Park in 2017 to join Chelsea, where he spent five largely-frustrating years, which included being loaned out to Aston Villa before joining Nice in Ligue 1, then Luton Town, before returning to Villa Park.

With The Friedkin Group (TFG) now being in charge at Everton, the rumour mill has started to spin, with more and more players being linked with joining the Toffees ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

It is unclear exactly what the transfer plan will be behind the scenes at Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, especially with the appointment of Nick Hammond, and according to Myers signings for David Moyes’ squad are very much a work in progress still.

Responding to the rumour that Barkley could be signed by the Toffees, the well-established Everton reporter Myers wrote on X (1 May): “I don’t believe any decisions on players coming in have been made yet.”

In a further reply on X, he added: “That’s not to say it [a Barkley deal] won’t happen, I think there’s a lot of discussion going on about what players will stay and who will come in.”

Football Insider verdict

While some fans might be excited at the prospect of Barkley returning to Merseyside, the Toffees should be looking beyond his talents and not live in the past.

Of course, he was a much-loved figure during his time at Goodison Park, linking up with Romelu Lukaku and pushing the Toffees to the verge of European qualification, but it is time to move on.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin could make a u-turn on his Everton future, though Idrissa Gueye, Abdoulaye Doucoure, and Jarrad Branthwaite could all join Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom out the exit doors.

It is likely to be a rather scary summer transfer window, especially with the number of changes to the squad expected, but it is very exciting for the fans to embark on a new era after Farhad Moshiri’s torrid reign.

TFG have already brought so much hope to Merseyside, and while the American Franchise are unlikely to unlock their warchest straight away, the future looks very bright for the Toffees, who have remained patient.
