Alan Shearer has said that Tottenham “threw away” their best chance of collecting silverware this season after their 3-2 League Cup defeat to West Ham on Wednesday.
Spurs dominated the first half at Wembley, going into the half time break with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli.
However a double from Andre Ayew restored parity for West Ham before Angelo Ogbonna headed home the winner to end Tottenham’s chances of adding to their four League Cup titles, the last of which came in 2008.
That was also Spurs’ last piece of silverware, and Shearer has blasted the club for letting this latest chance slip through their fingers, saying that the club must rectify their lack of trophies considering the quality of their current squad.
He told betting agency Coral on their website: “Tottenham have now got to make that final step and win something.
“They threw away one great chance of winning a trophy this week against West Ham and they have to go out and win something soon.
“The EFL Cup was a great chance to do that this season, possibly the best, but that’s now gone.
“They’ve got a young, talented squad full of potential with a great young manager in Mauricio Pochettino and they are a threat to Manchester City this season, but they need to cut out the silly defeats.”
Spurs will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing loss to the Hammers in their league match against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Shearer believes that Pochettino’s side could pick up victory over the Red Devils, but is expecting Jose Mourinho to employ tactics to frustrate the attacking threat of Spurs, who will be missing Harry Kane through injury.
“I expect United to try and frustrate Spurs by sitting deep and try to play on the break, as they know that if they try and take Tottenham on with open football, then they could easily get beaten,” he told Coral.
“There’s no doubt that Tottenham can go there and win. They have the players to punish United if given the time and space to, and Mourinho will be trying his best to nullify them.”
The two sides sit level on points in the table, with United in second and Spurs in third, with league leaders Manchester City a further five points ahead.
In other Tottenham news, the club are set to scout an international midfielder this weekend.
