Alan Shearer has stated on Twitter that almost 50,000 fans turning up to Newcastle beating Preston 6-0 in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night shows how much they want a cup run.
There were 49,042 supporters at St James’ Park, as a brace from Mitrovic and Mo Diame, including second-half strikes from Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez secured a thumping victory.
It means Rafa Benitez’ side have progressed through to the quarter-final stage of the EFL Cup, as they are also league leaders in the Championship.
But club legend Shearer praised the Toon Army for their magnificent support, as they crave for a cup win.

The Toon Army have been starved of trophies in recent decades, with their last major trophy coming in 1955, when they lifted the FA Cup.
Benitez’ side are on 31 points from 14 Championship games this season, as they top the table, three points ahead of Brighton who hold an automatic spot.
The Magpies travel to Deepdale to take on Preston for a second fixture in four days, as Simon Grayson’s side will be looking to avenge the heavy defeat from midweek.
In other Newcastle team news, supporters were delighted on Twitter as Aleksandar Mitrovic scored a brace for the Toon Army.
