Newcastle fans react on Twitter to Mitrovic display v Preston

By Will Butcher

Newcastle fans have reacted with delight on Twitter after Aleksander Mitrovic scored an impressive brace against Preston.

The Serbia international has been made to wait for his chance in the first team this season, but reminded manager Rafa Benitez what he could do with two well-taken goals.

Simon Grayson’s Preston were trounced 6-0 by the Toon, who have booked their place in the quarter finals of the EFL Cup with the win, thanks to a brace from Mohamed Diame while Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez also found the net.

The win also stretches the Magpies running streak to seven games, after Benitez’s side beat Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich in the Championship on Saturday by three goals to nil.

Newcastle fans have reacted with delight for their number 45, with many calling on manager Benitez to give the aggressive striker more of a chance in the league.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Before the game against Preston, Mitrovic had made just two starts for the Magpies with top scorer Dwight Gayle occupying the centre forward role in the side.

However, the sublime brace for Benitez’s side will give the former Real Madrid and Liverpool boss a selection headache as the Toon travel to Lancashire to face Simon Grayson’s side for a second time within one week.
