Alan Shearer reacts on Twitter to Newcastle demolition of Birmingham

By Harry Sykes

Alan Shearer reacted with delight on Twitter after Newcastle demolished Birmingham 4-0 in the Championship on Saturday afternoon.

The Magpies legend and lifelong fan praised Rafael Benitez’s team for returning to the top of the table after displacing Brighton, who took top spot for less than 24 hours after beating Leeds on Friday night.

Shearer took to his personal Twitter account to also praise Dwight Gayle, who scored a hat-trick to inspire the comfortable win at St James’ Park.

Striker Gayle broke the deadlock after 18 minutes when he headed in unmarked from a Mo Diame cross, and then finished a low cross for his second just six minutes later.

Striker Yoan Gouffran thumped in Newcastle’s third following a set-piece early in the second-half before Gayle’s 16th goal of the season from Jonjo Shelvey’s pass capped the win against the Blues, who drop out of the top six.

Following three games without a win, Newcastle fans might have feared an end-of-year wobble but any such concerns evaporated early as Rafael Benitez’s side imposed their dominance.

Gary Rowett’s side had climbed to fifth in the table, but failed to cope with the free-scoring hosts as their miserable run on Tyneside – four straight losses at St James’ Park – was extended.

By contrast, Newcastle leaped back to the top of the table to take their tally for the campaign to 43 points, one ahead of Brighton in second.
