Alan Shearer responds to Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United transfer update

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has reacted to the latest transfer update on Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

The Sweden international appears set to join the Magpies ahead of the 2025/26 campaign after impressing at the City Ground, notching 11 goals and 21 assists in 82 appearances.

Nuno Espirito Santo will be hugely disappointed with losing one of his greatest assets, but after only signing the player for £15million in 2023 [BBC Sport], funds will be available to sign a replacement.

Forest have already added Brazilian talent Igor Jesus, who scored against PSG at the Club World Cup this summer, but it will take much more to fill Elanga’s boots this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side, on the other hand, have already missed out on Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen and Joao Pedro to Chelsea, but the latest update would suggest they are set to win one transfer race.

Nottingham Forest set to lose Anthony Elanga

Taking to Instagram (7 July), Fabrizio Romano wrote: “HERE WE GO! Newcastle agree a deal to sign Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest,” with white and black hearts, and a lightning bolt emoji.

He continued: “Club to club agreement now in place for £55million fee as personal terms have also been agreed with his camp. New winger and excellent addition for Howe,” with Shearer liking the post.

Newcastle United finally kickstart summer transfer window

Football Insider verdict

Newcastle were attempting to add to their backline of Fabian Schar, Sven Botman, and Dan Burn, but Football Insider understands that Liverpool are planning a new deal for Marc Guehi.

That is just one of several missed transfers for the Magpies, but with Elanga edging towards St James’ Park this summer, it could be just the start of a successful few weeks for the club.

After beating Liverpool to the EFL Cup and narrowly securing Champions League qualification with a top-five finish, Howe will be keen to push even further with the Magpies.

While the current transfer window has been a frustrating one for the supporters so far, finally signing Elanga could be a turning point at St James’ Park, adding to an already star-studded attacking lineup.

Mick Brown told Football Insider that Newcastle are confident of keeping Alexander Isak, with Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes, and Anthony Gordon all expected to stay.

These will be incredibly key for the team’s success next season, and with Elanga set to join, the Magpies could be set for even more achievements in 2025/26.
