Alan Shearer sends Erling Haaland message over record threat after Man City news
Alan Shearer has been in touch with Erling Haaland over his Premier League scoring record after the Man City star’s huge new contract announcement.
On 17 January, Haaland signed a lucrative nine-and-a-half-year deal, extending his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2034.
The announcement led many fans to believe that the long-term commitment from the striker suggests they are not guilty of the 115 charges related to alleged financial breaches.
Former Premier League striker Shearer responded to the news on X, cheekily hinting that Haaland should aim to break his record of 260 goals. The City forward is currently on 79 goals in just 87 games.
Shearer jokingly wrote on X: “Congratulations Erling Haaland. Nine and a half years? It surely shouldn’t take you that long?”
Man City striker Erling Haaland is well on his way to beat goalscoring record
With 79 goals in 87 appearances, Haaland is rapidly closing in on Shearer’s record, putting it in jeopardy. If Haaland maintains his current pace and stays at City for the next decade, he could surpass an extraordinary 350 goals in the league.
He reacted to the news of his contract extension on social media, but he has yet to respond to Shearer’s cheeky comment.
Amidst the 115 charges hanging over City, speculation has grown about whether these legal issues have affected the team’s performances this season. Currently, they are 12 points behind league leaders Liverpool and sit in sixth place.
Despite the looming charges, Haaland’s new contract has given fans something to be excited about. Football Insider revealed that the Cityzens may have to wait until March for any decision to be published, so a resolution is still some way off.
A rebuild seems to be on the agenda for the club, with heavy links to Abdulkodir Khusanov, Victor Reis, and advanced negotiations for Omar Marmoush.
It seems that Haaland will continue to be the spearhead of this City team, regardless of any changes or potential charges.
In other news, Man City have set their sights on signing in this position in the January transfer window.
