Alan Shearer blasted Liverpool’s team selection in the FA Cup and feels their season is effectively over if they lose to Chelsea on Tuesday.
The Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup in the fourth-round after losing 2-1 to Wolves on Saturday.
Jurgen Klopp made nine changes to his starting line-up and his fringe players were beaten by the Championship opposition at Anfield.
The Merseyside club have been eliminated from both the EFL and FA Cup in the past week, and also have no European commitments this season.
Shearer claims that Liverpool’s Premier League match against Chelsea is now a must-win for them to keep their season alive and is astounded by their tactical approach to the FA Cup.
“Lose on Tuesday now against Chelsea and Liverpool’s season is all but over at the start of February,” Shearer wrote in his Sun column. “Had they beaten Wolves, however, there would still be plenty to look forward to.
“I don’t get and never have done resting of players. Liverpool are not even in Europe and have got 16 league games left this season in four months. It’s crazy I don’t understand it.”
Liverpool’s sole focus is now on the Premier League and they are hoping to win their first ever Premier League title.
They have been regarded as one of their frontrunners for the league during most of the season, but have suffered a serious drop in form recently.
Klopp’s side have won just once in their last eight games across all competitions, including two defeats in the last three Premier League matches.
They welcome table toppers Chelsea to Anfield on Tuesday night and are currently 10 points behind them.
In other Liverpool news, Danny Murphy claims the club’s 24-year-old must start against Chelsea.
