Danny Murphy has called on Jurgen Klopp to throw Sadio Mane back into his Liverpool side against Chelsea on Tuesday.
The 24-year-old is set to return to Anfield in the coming days after Senegal were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations in the quarter-final, after losing to Cameroon on penalties.
Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day FA Cup coverage, Murphy pleaded with Klopp to start the speed machine at Anfield, even if he is suffering from jet lag come Tuesday.
“There is nothing better, when you’re in a bad run of form, to face a big test under the lights at Anfield against a side like Chelsea,” Murphy claimed.
“Even if he has only just stepped off the plane, Sadio Mane needs to start. They’ve missed him dearly, but Klopp needs to bring him back to give Liverpool a chance.”
Mane missed a penalty in the shootout for his country, after the two countries drew 0-0 after 120 minutes of football.
It now means the flying winger will be available for selection on Tuesday, as he remains Liverpool’s joint top scorer with nine goals, despite last featuring for the Reds on January 2.
The Merseyside giants form has been woeful since Mane’s departure to Gabon, with just one win in seven league and cup encounters.
Losing to Wolves in the FA Cup on Saturday, Murphy believes the return of the £35million signing is vital if Liverpool are to secure a result against Antonio Conte’s league leaders.
