Alan Smith believes Tottenham can still beat Chelsea to the Premier League title after their 2-0 victory on Wednesday – even though they are seven points behind their rivals.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side secured all three points and simultaneously stopped Chelsea’s winning streak of 13 league games, thanks to two Dele Alli headers at White Hart Lane.
Smith made the bold claim on Wednesday night while commentating on Spurs’ convincing Premier League victory, that saw Pochettino’s side jump to third in the table.
“Tottenham made a statement with the win,” Smith told Sky Sports 1’s live coverage of the match. “The gap between Chelsea and Spurs is now seven points, and it is certainly a gap.
“Pochettino will know his side have a lot of work to do, but it’s not impossible. A lot of it depends on how Chelsea react from this loss.”
Alli, 20, headed Tottenham to their 12th league win of the season with two identical goals that were both supplied from the right foot of Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen.
Pochettino’s three-man defence of Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen performed stoutly as they prevented Premier League top scorer Diego Costa from influencing the match.
The win sees Spurs leapfrog north London rivals Arsenal after they failed to secure a win against Bournemouth on Tuesday night, after drawing 3-3 at the Vitality Stadium.
With their sights firmly set on the top of the table, Pochettino could rest some of his star players on Saturday as they host Championship giants Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.
In other Tottenham news, Brad Friedel has hailed this Spurs ace after the win against Antonio Conte’s league leaders.
