Alexander Isak responds after Newcastle deal agreed

Fabian Schar shared an emotional message with fans on social media after the latest update on his Newcastle future.

The Swiss centre-back has been a consistent presence for the Magpies since joining in 2018, racking up over 200 appearances in black and white.

Now at 33, Schar has remained a key figure this season, making 33 appearances and stepping up in defence during Sven Botman’s absence through injury.

As he entered the final months of his contract—alongside teammates Callum Wilson and Jamaal Lascelles—uncertainty began to grow over whether the long-serving defender would stay at St James’ Park.

However, back in February, Football Insider revealed that Newcastle were confident of securing an extension for Schar, and it now appears progress has been made after he posted a heartfelt update on his future on social media.

Fabian Schar agrees new Newcastle deal despite fan concerns

The defender confirmed his contract extension with Newcastle in a post on Instagram, writing: “Very proud to have signed a contract extension with NUFC! This has become my home over the past 7 years and there is nowhere I would rather be! Let’s finish the Premier League season strong now!”

The post received a wave of support, with Bruno Guimaraes responding with heart emojis and Jacob Murphy commenting: “Congrats Fabi.” Sven Botman, Alexander Isak and Lewis Hall were among those who liked the post.

Despite the defender’s consistency this season, some Newcastle fans have questioned if the club should extend Schar’s deal earlier in the season.

Their concerns stem mainly from his age, with some supporters preferring the idea of a younger, long-term centre-back being brought in instead.

Schar has also faced criticism for moments such as his mistake in the FA Cup defeat to Brighton, which led to their exit from the competition. Still, Eddie Howe continues to trust him, and the club clearly values his experience—offering him a one-year extension to stay on Tyneside.

Newcastle push for Dean Huijsen despite Schar extension

While Schar’s renewal gives Newcastle stability at the back, the club is still actively targeting a centre-back with long-term potential.

Football Insider revealed that Newcastle are among the sides chasing Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen.

However, a move for the 19-year-old may hinge on whether they can secure Champions League qualification. Interest is high, with Liverpool also keen on signing Huijsen following his standout performances this season.

Even with a new centre-back potentially on the way, Schar remains a reliable option. A future role as a rotation or depth player seems likely, but for now, his focus is firmly on ending the season strongly.
