'All for it' - Rangers star gives verdict on Gerrard landing senior role
Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has claimed that it is an honour to work with Gers boss Steven Gerrard – and admits he was “all for” the legendary midfielder’s appointment.
Gerrard has taken his first steps in management with the Ibrox giants and Halliday only wishes Gerrard was younger so he could play for the Gers too.
The Light Blues ace revealed that despite being retired you can still see the “quality” Gerrard and his assistant Gary McAllister had as players going through drills.
“He is obviously a massive name in world football and was one of the best players of his generation. It is an honour to work with him, and he has played under many great managers himself in the past, so he has probably picked up bits and bobs from them in his career,” Halliday told Rangers’ official website.
“I think any appointment as a Rangers manager is a risk, but I was all for it and I think it is an excellent appointment for the club.
“It would be excellent if they were 20 years younger and they could join us in the team as well. You can see in the training drills where they get involved that they still have quality.”

Football Insider verdict:
Halliday might wish for a younger Gerrard and McAllister but it would only make Halliday’s chances of a game even slimmer. The midfielder still even being a Rangers player is a surprise and in truth, Gerrard and McAllister would probably offer more now than Halliday ever has. It won’t be a surprise to see Halliday depart later this summer. The midfielder has never really got going consistently at Ibrox and has been surpassed by the quality of signings coming into the side this summer. After some of his performances last season, it’s a miracle he even made the pool for the trip to Spain. While it’s clear that Halliday absolutely loves being a Rangers player, it’s clear he can’t contribute anything moving forward and his time at the club is coming to an end. At best Halliday might only be fifth or sixth choice in central midfield for the Gers.
