Hibernian assistant manager Garry Parker has insisted Rangers will need to “put all their money” into buying midfielder John McGinn for Hibs – and suggested the 23-year-old could cost the Ibrox giants £6million.
The Ibrox giants are reported to be interested in signing the Scotland international, according to the Daily Record, and Parker is adamant it will cost the Light Blues a record fee between two Scottish clubs to get McGinn along the M8.
Parker claimed that if the Gers were to sign McGinn then it would give Hibs a good amount of funds to rebuild their side.
“I heard they’re looking to spend £6m – so are they going to put all their money into buying one player?” Parker said, as quoted by the Sunday Post.
“That’s £6million for us to go and choose some players then.”
When asked if the Gers would have to spend all of that cash to sign McGinn, Parker added: “If that’s what they’re saying they have, and they’re going to buy him.”
Football Insider verdict
£6million for John McGinn is an absolutely laughable suggestion for a player who has had one season of top-flight football without ever setting the world alight. With the record between two Scottish clubs sitting at £4.4million, there is absolutely no chance that the Gers are going to waste £6million on a player who is still very much a work in progress. If Hibs do somehow manage to get that sort of money for the midfielder then something is serious wrong with the game. McGinn is a good player but he’s not THAT good and is yet to show anything for Hibs that makes him stand out from countless other players in that position who would cost a fraction of the £6million the capital side want. Perhaps in a few years times once McGinn sustains a consistently high level of performance they might manage to convince someone to part with that sort of money but right now there’s no chance anyone at Rangers should be considering it.
