Alli 'could be the saviour' of Newcastle after player stance on late deal revealed - pundit

Dele Alli could be the “saviour” of Newcastle if he can complete a late-window switch from Tottenham, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 25-year-old could “ignite” the Magpies’ survival charge.

According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein (25 January), Jesse Lingard’s proposed loan to Newcastle is on the brink of collapse with the Tyneside club unwilling to pay a “sizeable loan fee” for the 29-year-old.

The Magpies could now turn their attention to signing Alli, with Football Insider revealing on Friday (21 January) that preliminary talks have opened between the two parties.

A source with knowledge of the midfielder’s situation told this site on 22 January that the player is “very keen” to make the move to Newcastle as he looks to reignite his career.

When asked if he could see a deal for Alli materialising, Whelan told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “Any kind of quality they can bring through the door between now and Monday is worth doing.

“There’s no doubt that Dele Alli needs a change – and he might well ignite them.

“There’s still a player in there somewhere, he’s still so young – it’s just finding that consistent level.

“I think both Newcastle and Tottenham need this transfer to happen – it’s a nice little triangle.

“There’s a challenge there to bring out the best in him and listen – he could end up being their saviour.

“He needs that all-important game time and perhaps someone to believe in him that little bit more.”

Newcastle sit 18th in the Premier League after picking up just their second win of the season against Leeds United on Saturday.

The Magpies are now just one point adrift of 18th-place Watford.
