Andros Townsend responds on Twitter to speculation about Newcastle January transfer

By Amir Mir

Andros Townsend has responded to speculation about a possible return to Newcastle in January.

The Crystal Palace winger liked a video on Twitter named by a Magpies supporter, ‘Would you bring this boy home?’ which showed Townsend’s best moments for the club.

The 25-year-old joined Palace in the summer when he left Rafa Benitez’ relegated outfit to make a move back up to the Premier League.

However, the Daily Mail claimed on Saturday that Newcastle are mulling over a potential deal to bring him back to the club this month.

This season for the London club, Townsend has played 22 games in all competitions, scoring one goal and supplying two assists.

During his time at St James’ Park, he played 13 games in the top tier, scoring four goals and supplying two assists.

The England international has a contract at Selhurst Park which runs until 2021 and is currently working under former Magpies boss Sam Allardyce who replaced the sacked Alan Pardew in December.

Football Insider verdict:

Andros Townsend should focus on staying at Selhurst Park and trying to add some form into his game for the latter stages of the Premier League season. Rafa Benitez’ side are well on course for a return to the top flight and if they gain promotion, they should then make a move for the winger. Otherwise, it is highly unlikely that Townsend will move down to the Championship having previously moved to Crystal Palace because he wanted to play top tier football. Nonetheless, if the Magpies do snap him up during the January transfer window then it will be the best signing Benitez’ side will make this month. Not only that, it will almost ensure they finish in and automatic place come the end of the season.
