Anthony Gordon and Everton teammate lambasted as 'shocking' footage analysed - pundit

Noel Whelan has slammed Anthony Gordon and Richarlison for their “shocking” defending as Everton suffered a crucial 3-2 loss against Brentford on Sunday (15 May).

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the pair’s “lack of concentration” had cost Frank Lampard’s side the game at Goodison Park.

As seen in footage from Sky Sports, Brentford defender Rico Henry takes advantage of a flat-footed Gordon to steal in and nod home the winner with 25 minutes remaining.

Earlier in the second half, Richarlison switched off during a Bees corner, allowing Yoane Wissa to beat him to the front post and loop a header past Jordan Pickford (as per Sky Sports).

Everton sit 16th in the Premier League table – two points clear of the drop zone with two games remaining.

Whelan suggested a “lack of concentration” will be punished “nine times out of ten” in England’s “brutal” top flight.

“It’s just a symptom of pressure,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Gordon just wasn’t concentrating. It’s a shocking bit of defending. You’ve got to concentrate.

“You’ll be punished maybe 60% of the time for that in the Championship. In the Premier League, nine times out of ten – that sort of thing will result in a goal.

“It’s a lack of concentration – he’s not marking properly, and the Premier League is brutal.

“Richarlison did it with Wissa’s goal too. He doesn’t know where his man is, he doesn’t get his body right – and those are the details they need to get right.

“It’s cost them the game.”

Everton will be without suspended duo Salomon Rondon and Jarrad Branthwaite when they host Crystal Palace on Thursday (19 May).

The Toffees then face Arsenal on the final day (22 May).
