Anthony Gordon: Newcastle should be willing to offload in-demand star as 0% stat vs Crystal Palace emerges

Anthony Gordon is the subject of significant interest away from Newcastle United this summer amid a potential exit.

The winger featured as the Magpies lost 2-1 to Crystal Palace on Sunday, with Jean-Philippe Mateta’s brace cancelling out Will Osula’s first-half effort.

The loss is Newcastle’s third in a row, and has left them needing a miracle if they are to qualify for European football.

Absence from any European competitions would reportedly result in the sale of one or two big names, due to the financial situation at St James’ Park.

Newcastle transfer chiefs are preparing for a busy summer, with Gordon set to be among the names at the centre of the conversation.

Anthony Gordon was dismal vs Crystal Palace

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider last month that Liverpool are leading the race for Gordon this summer.

The winger is reportedly being monitored by several teams, including Premier League leaders Arsenal and Manchester United.

Newcastle will hope to go close to doubling the £40million they paid Everton to sign the England international in 2023, with his contract set to run until 2030.

Gordon has scored 17 goals across all competitions this season, and has been one of few standouts for Eddie Howe’s team.

Yet there have been several frustrations with the 25-year-old, who can often watch games pass him by.

Sunday’s clash was a perfect example. The forward failed to create a single chance or take a shot on goal, completing zero per cent of his attempted dribbles and winning just three duels.

Gordon clearly has talent, but there are likely voices at Newcastle making the case that there are players more important in the squad.

What Eddie Howe said about Gordon’s future

Newcastle will be ultimately keen to keep Gordon at the club this summer. The winger is a dangerous option and will be hard to replace.

Should an offer in the region of £80million arrive, however, decision-makers would be hard-pressed to decline it.

A fee of that echelon would allow Newcastle to make much-needed investment throughout the squad, easing their problems with the profit and sustainability rules.

Gordon remains a Magpie until that bid arrives, though, and Howe confirmed in February that any early rumours are merely conjecture.

“I’m not sure there’s a lot I can do about that,” he said. “I’ve not seen the story, so it’s news to me. But we’re mid-season, we’re in the middle of some of the biggest games of his career and who knows what’s going to happen internationally with him in the summer as well.

“He’s got not time to look left or right, he’s got to be fully focused on straight ahead and the next game and trying to be as good as he can be.”
