‘Anthony Gordon to Liverpool will accelerate after Luis Diaz offer accepted’

Liverpool are considering making a move to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon if Luis Diaz is sold in the transfer window.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson explained that, despite their interest, a move for Gordon is a non-starter while the Colombia international remains at Anfield.

As things stand, Diaz is expected to remain at Liverpool as things stand after the Reds rebuffed two offers for the Colombia international from Bayern Munich.

Football Insider revealed on 14 July that Liverpool will demand £69million to sell Diaz amid doubts about whether clubs will be prepared to meet their asking price.

However, should the winger agitate for a move and attempt to manufacture a deal with Bayern Munich, Liverpool may be forced to turn their attentions to Gordon.

This comes after Football Insider exclusively revealed on 10 July that Liverpool remain interested in Gordon and are plotting a late-summer move.

Liverpool make Anthony Gordon decision after Luis Diaz latest

Gordon has been a long-term target for Arne Slot’s side, and came very close to a move to Anfield last summer as sources say he was “very keen” on the switch.

Football Insider revealed last month that Liverpool would have to pay £75-80million to land the England international as Newcastle remain reluctant to lose him.

Robinson explained that should Diaz leave Anfield, they will set their sights on Gordon, but the deal is a non-starter as things stand.

“It only happens if Diaz goes,” he told Football Insider.

“If Diaz stays at Liverpool, which it looks very much like he is going to do after they rebuffed that bid from Bayern Munich…

“We know there’s been a bid from Bayern Munich which was rebuffed immediately, and Barcelona are also interested in Luis Diaz.

“From Liverpool’s point of view, they’ve dug their heels in over Luis Diaz.

“There’s no space in that wide area for Liverpool to bring in somebody like Anthony Gordon.

“It’s quite simple, if Diaz doesn’t make noises that he wants out, he’s not going anywhere.

“If he starts making noises and making waves that he wants out, even manufactures a move, then there are some legs in the Anthony Gordon rumour.

“At the moment, I don’t see that being a starter whatsoever.

“He’s still only 24, Anthony Gordon, and I suspect he’s on a long contract at Newcastle, so it would take a lot of money to get him out.

“Unless Diaz starts making waves about wanting out, I think that’s a non-starter.”

Jean-Philippe Mateta update emerges after agent talks

Alongside their ambitions of signing Gordon, the Reds have been working hard to sign a new striker and are closing in on signing Hugo Ekitike.

Football Insider revealed on 20 July that, as a result, Liverpool are unlikely to sign Jean-Philippe Mateta despite having held talks with his agent.

Liverpool held talks with Mateta’s representatives in Paris in the last week as they planned to explore a number of options up front, but their interest has gone no further.

This comes after Robinson told Football Insider that Liverpool could make a late move for Mateta should they miss out on other targets.
