Arsenal could now move for ‘target man’ after Gabriel Jesus news – pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Arsenal to “go into the market again” for another forward after agreeing terms with Man City’s Gabriel Jesus.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested Mikel Arteta’s side will be looking to bolster their ranks with a “target man” this summer.

An Arsenal source told this site on Sunday (5 June) that Jesus has agreed terms of a lucrative long-term contract but the two clubs have yet to agree a fee.

The Gunners are also reportedly ready to make an approach for Italy international hitman Gianluca Scamacca – who stands at 6ft 5in.

Football Insider has revealed (27 April) that 6ft 2in forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin is likely to leave Everton this summer and that he has told friends he wants a move to Arsenal.

Whelan suggested the Gunners board will be willing to open the chequebook yet again to fund Arteta’s rebuild.

“If the right players are available, then they’ll go into the market again,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“The Arsenal board have shown their willingness, more so than ever I think, to give the manager the funds he needs.

“Getting Jesus is the next step. But if it’s just him and Nketiah, I think you need another option.

“Jesus can play all across that front three, so he’s not necessarily that out-and-out striker.

“I think maybe a different type of attacker, someone a bit taller and a bit more of a target man.

“They’ll be looking into that as well.”
